- Pets at Home
Pets at Home are the biggest pet shop in the UK, and are now spending
a lot of money on advertising to enable them to expand further.
For some years they have been selling their own foods. This started
with Wainwrights, as a well priced natural recipe. More recently
there was the launch of Pets at Home pet food, in a more expensive
bag. Now that's gone and we have 'Advanced Nutrition' and a cheap
and cheerful with 'moist meaty chunks'!

This makes good business sense for Pets at Home, but I wonder whether
this is actually giving better choice or value for Pets at Home
customers?
Why do I say that? Because stocking a range of 'own brand' products
means that the number of competitor brands is squeezed, with less
shelf space available (and that seems to me to be what's happening
when I go shopping at PAH).
There is more chance therefore that customers will choose a PAH
product - which makes good business sense because they make considerably
more profit from these than a bag of James Wellbeloved or Royal
Canin, but maybe reduces choice for pet owners.
Want a good quality dried food? Go for the Wainwrights rather than
the Advanced Nutrition brand.
