Wainwrights Dog Food from Pets at Home

wainwrightsPets at Home have been selling their own brand of dog and cat food for some time now, and we've tried it and like it a lot. The Wainwright's brand was the first own brand food that PAH really promoted heavily and it's a good, natural food for dogs and well worth considering as an option.

What we like about Pets at Home is that they are very open and honest in their ingredient declaration - no general 'vitamins and minerals' but listing what's in there, along with the fact that they use a natural antioxident.

It is also considerably cheaper than many well known brands that offer similar products at the premium end of the market. Why? you might ask...

It's mainly down to the number of people taking a cut of the retail price! Pats at Home buy their food direct from theirmanufacturer and sell it to you. Other companies have to buy the food, then distribute it via wholesalers and retailers, each of whom wants their 30-40% markup. Common sense therefore tells you that PAH should be able to offer a good deal, perhaps even better than they actually do!

In fact you can save a lot. At around £30 for a 15kg sack Wainwrights compares well with natural, premium foods costing £42+ a bag. Tray foods offer less of a saving, but production costs on these are proportionally higher so there's not so much room for generosity here.

Our long term trial with Wainwright's foods would indicate that you get good results with coat, skin and digestion - although as with all such foods it is important not to overfeed, so stick to the guidlines. The Wainwright's food is slightly higher in protein and oil than a product such as Burns, so there's less likelihood of an underweight dog... but we also have to be careful not to end up with an overweight one - feed at the lower end of the feeding range and then adjust upwards if you need to, rather than the other way around!

So what's in Wainwrights? Basically it's all good stuff, so let's look at a couple of recipes as an example:
