Product review - Eukanuba

eukanuba

Eucanuba is one of those brands that generates views at either extreme of pet ownership opinion. One camp swears by the brand as offering consistant high quality nutrition backed up with the scientific research to prove it works. The other swears at it for conducting the research upon which the food is formulated.

eukanubaSo if you are in the latter camp, you'd better not go any further, because we're simply going to look at the food in isolation, and make judgements based upon what Eucanuba seem to be offering.

What you get with Eukanuba is a very large range of foods, from standard adult mainenance foods through their more natural range to prescription veterinary foods (which are also available online from the likes of Pets at Home and Pet Supermarket. Also within the range are breed and lifestyle specific foods.

Eukanuba include probiotics in most of their recipes. They say 'Did you know 65% of your dog’s immune system is found in the digestive tract? Eukanuba's Prebiotics, like FOS, have the ability to positively impact a dog’s defences. FOS promotes the growth of good bacteria and in the process reduces bad bacteria.

'The digestive tract is an important part of a dog's defence system. One of its roles is to maintain the balance between good and bad bacteria. Feeding a diet with prebiotics helps promote good bacteria. Along with Eukanuba's many nutritional firsts, we were the first pet food company to introduce FOS in 1994. Today at Eukanuba we include the prebiotic FOS in the majority of our formulas.'

Like Iams, Eukanuba use a proportion of wheat in most of their recipes which is not one of the mose easily digested cereals. They also use the vague term 'animal fat' rather than matching the fat to the protein source. It is better to know what you are feeding, if for no other reason that it gives confidence that there is a consistency in the formulation.

For that reason we would not recommend Eukanuba as highly as some other foods.

Eukanuba is usually on special offer at the bigger stockists, so don't pay full price (which is high!). Check out G J Titmuss who have 2 bag deals, Pet supermarket for special monthly deals and Pets at Home for range and special prices.
